Sometimes, I imagine what it would have been like to know my grandmother in her younger years

not as her granddaughter, but as a friend from her own time. I imagine sitting across from her, sharing everyday moments, listening to her stories, and discovering the person she was beyond the role I knew. Before she became my grandmother, she was a young woman with her own friendships, laughter, thoughts, and dreams. She had a life filled with moments I will never fully know, but can only imagine through the traces she left behind.

In this imagined memory, two women wearing traditional yếm sit together at a table surrounded by lotus flowers and leaves. One woman wears her hair freely, resting comfortably with her upper body leaning toward the table. She looks relaxed and slightly lost in thought, while the other woman watches her with a gentle smile. Their quiet interaction reflects a bond built on trust—the kind of connection where one can simply be themselves and feel understood without needing many words.

I imagine the woman across from her as someone who shared this closeness with my grandmother: a friend, a sister-like companion, someone who knew her not only through her responsibilities, but through her thoughts, laughter, and dreams.

The golden background and lotus flowers create a timeless atmosphere. The lotus symbolizes quiet strength, resilience, and the beauty that grows through life’s experiences. The warm golden space becomes a place beyond time, a place where I can imagine meeting my grandmother as the young woman she once was.

Perhaps I will never know who she truly shared these moments with.

But through imagination, I can create a space where I can sit beside her, listen to her stories, and get to know the person she might have been.
